A SAM review requires the right people, processes and
tools. The purchase of a SAM tool can automate the asset discovery and inventory
process, but it can not completely eliminate the manual component.
The use of the appropriate tool is essential to the success of 'License
Reconciliation' and ongoing SAM, so we have established partnerships
with a range of SAM tool vendors.
We do not recommend one tool in
particular as the right tool for your business depends on the particular
platforms and technology you have in place, the size of your software real
estate, and your budget. Click on any of the logos to the left for further
information on each SAM tool and use the 'get a quote' for pricing. If
you require any further information to help you choose the right tool
then please call us.
SAM tools capabilities basically fall into three
categories and most perform all three functions:
Repository Tools
Repository
tools are designed to act as the data repository for the tracking of
procurement, inventory, maintenance, and
retirement information relating to the software and hardware that your business
owns. This allows for the continuous and accurate reporting of financial,
physical and asset information of interest to your business. Repository tools
require some manual data input but do have some automated capabilities for
importing license information from various data sources and work well with the
inventory data produced by discovery tools such as Asset Search.
Discovery Tools
Also known as Inventory or Tracking tools, a
discovery tool will automatically collect the physical data from your networked
hardware/software assets (e.g. memory, processor and software versions)
including remote users that dial in. Rather than collecting all the inventory
data each time, a discovery tool only records and sends the changes made to an
asset, saving valuable bandwidth.
Metering Tools
Metering tools, or software usage tools as they are also known, track an
applications usage. They can be used to monitor and control the use of
unauthorised applications (e.g. games and screen savers) and can produce the
greatest cost
savings by identifying unused software that could be utilised elsewhere in your
company.
